Kate Mitchell is a multidisciplinary artist working across moving image, photography, drawing, textiles, installation and participatory practice.
Her work is grounded in an interest in interdependence: how bodies, emotions, objects, environments and social worlds are entangled within a larger web of relation and responsibility. Mitchell asks what becomes possible when we understand ourselves as an integral and active part of the world around us, rather than separate from it.
Bringing ritual, belief, institutional language, humour and conceptual art into contact, Mitchell examines the values and assumptions that shape how we understand ourselves and one another. Her work attends to emotion, intuition, care, motherhood, children’s agency and the unseen, translating these concerns into objects, images, texts, moving image works and participatory propositions.
Earlier physically demanding and durational video works tested endurance, performance, transformation and belief. Her more recent work extends these concerns through soft sculpture, text, colour, ritual and participation.
Her work is included in leading public and private collections across Australia including: Kadist Foundation, Paris and San Francisco; Michael Buxton Collection, Melbourne; Artbank, Sydney and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney. Mitchell was a Carriageworks Clothing Store Artist in Residence 2019-2020 and a Cementa 24 artist.
The artist is represented by Chalk Horse Gallery, Sydney.
